Leeds United Sends Sam Greenwood on Loan, Preston North End Swoops for Attacking Midfielder

Leeds United have had Sam Greenwood on their roster since 2020, bringing him in from the Arsenal academy. He was developed in the LUFC U21s before making his senior debut under their watch.
Opportunities have come for Greenwood in both the Championship and Premier League at Elland Road, but he’s currently on his second consecutive season-long loan away from the club.

Having spent the 2023/24 campaign at Middlesbrough, Greenwood linked up with Preston North End last July. Game time was set to be limited with Daniel Farke’s side, so the call to send him out for minutes elsewhere was made.
Do Preston have an option to buy Greenwood?
Greenwood, now 23, has been a regular starter for Paul Heckingbottom’s Preston North End, so his move to find action away from Leeds United has paid off. Playing as a number 10, striker, or out on the left-wing, the Sunderland-born prospect has chipped in with seven goals and two assists in 36 games across all competitions. His impact has waned a little recently, with Heckingbottom highlighting a desire to manage his workload.

On the whole, though, Greenwood has been a hit at Deepdale, and the chance is there for him to stay permanently if all parties desire.
Reports said upon his arrival that Preston and Leeds United had agreed to insert a buy option in his loan.
What has been said about a permanent deal?
Speaking earlier this month about the prospect of a Deepdale stay, LUFC loanee Greenwood admitted he will be taking all matters into consideration ahead of such a ‘big decision’ over his future. As quoted by the Lancashire Post, he said:
“Each season goes so quickly. I’m going to see what happens at the end of the season and I’ll obviously take into big consideration Preston.
“It’s a big decision. I’m in the present at the minute and I’ll come to that at the end of the season.
“It’s just one of them. I don’t really think about that at the minute. I just want to focus on my football, play, score as many as I can and just make things happen for this team.”
Additionally, PNE director and former Leeds United chairman Peter Ridsdale has said the call will be firmly in the hands of Greenwood and manager Heckingbottom, saying:
“The decision on that will be in two people’s hands and that’s the manager here and Sam’s hands.
“The Leeds promotion, or otherwise, is not a complicating factor because all of that’s been taken into account in the numbers that have already been agreed between us and Leeds.
“If Sam says ‘I’d like to sign for Preston’ and the manager says ‘I’d like him to sign’, the financials are already agreed. Whether Leeds stay down or go up is irrelevant.”
Time will tell just what comes of Greenwood’s summer transfer fate, but the door is open for him to move on from LUFC and stay with Preston if all parties are keen on a deal.
